2020 Finalist Cosmetic Tattooist of the Year

Choosing your artist

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT COSMETIC TATTOOIST FOR YOU?

Choosing the right Cosmetic Tattooist for you can be confusing. We are an unregulated industry, as such, we do not need/have to obtain certification to teach or perform our treatments. From my 9 years tattooing experience, I have put together the following information and considerations to help you choose the right artist for you;

TIP #1

Ask to see their qualifications:

  • Do they have certificates of qualification?
  • Did they learn in a 3+ month course or a 1-7 day course?
  • Do they offer more than one technique? One technique does not suit all skin types.
  • Was it on-line or hands on?
  • When was it completed?
  • Have they continued their education since?
  • How often do they update their skills?
  • Do they have proof of further education?

TIP # 2

Must Haves

  • Do they hold current Public Liability and Medical Malpractice Insurance Policy?
  • Do they have certification of completion of an Infection Control course?
  • Do they have a current Council Licence for Skin Penetration?

TIP # 3

Clinic/Studio

  • Evaluate the cleanliness/presentation of their rooms.
  • Are they using disposable needles/attachments? Ask to see.

TIP #4

Pigment/Ink

  • How many colour options do they have?

There should be at least 10-15 colour options for lips, 10-15 colour options for eyebrows and 2-4 for eyeliner.

  • Where are they getting their pigments from?
  • Do they know what is in them?

TIP #5

Are their documents and consent forms professional and organised? Does it explain all information for and against cosmetic tattoo treatments?

TIP #6

Have they shown you a portfolio of their work? Are you seeing healed or immediately after? Do you like what you see?

TIP #7

Manner

  • Does the practitioner present in a professional manner?
  • Are they attentive and patient?
  • Do they listen well?
  • Do you feel rushed?
  • Are they pushy – wanting to do what they want
  • Do you feel like you can communicate well with them?

TIP #8

  • Do they specialise in the field, practising on a daily basis or do they do treatments occasionally?

I recommend consulting with at least a few practitioners, with consideration to the above list. Do not select your practitioner based on price alone, cheap is not always an indication of a bargain. After all this is your face, and this is a long-lasting treatment. Your artist should be selected based on evidence of past work, honesty, professionalism and reputation.

The bitterness of a poor-quality treatment lingers long after the sweetness of low a price is forgotten. Thank you for reading; I hope it has helped in your selection.
